Beautifying our surroundings is something humans excel at. What better way to achieve this than with prints? From the most basic to the most daring, there truly is something for everyone. They're there to delight our eyes, our belongings, and our clothes, and like many, we love them.

The origins

Have you ever wondered how the flowers or stripes on your favorite top were applied to the fabric? If so, we can guide you by giving you a quick history of textile printing techniques.

Printed textiles originated in India and are not a recent invention, with some patterns and prints dating back approximately 2,000 years. The Indians developed these prints using the mordanting technique, which still underpins the quality of vegetable-based textile dyes today. This process is called mordant because it requires the use of mordants, metallic salts that fix the dye to the fabric.

Over the centuries, various techniques were created and modified, leading to the textile printing techniques used by the industry today. Originally, the two main techniques were hand painting and dyeing using woodblocks. While the first technique involved creating the design directly onto the fabric with a brush, the second relied on engraving woodblocks, which allowed the design to be transferred to the fabric after the dye was applied.

Nowadays, printing is primarily digital, or it can be done using a laser. In our case, at MAEVY, our printed materials are printed digitally.

The icons

Prints and patterns can become essential elements of a clothing brand's identity. Can you think of Jean-Paul Gaultier without his Breton striped shirt or Burberry without its tartan? Indeed, they can become a brand's signature, allowing us to identify it at a glance.

In this case, at MAEVY, prints have a recent history. But whatever happens, in a desire to remain free to choose, the prints and patterns will change each season to reflect our desires.

Celebrating colors, bringing fabrics to life

Adding color to fabric gives it life. So, if the fabric becomes the canvas for a pattern composed of several colors that enhance each other, how can one remain unmoved?

Fantasy, colors, and patterns—that's what we want to offer you. Why? To celebrate our love of color, always striving to give it more energy.

We offer printed designs that coordinate perfectly with the rest of our collection. For example, the Spring/Summer 2021 collection was built around a print chosen by Marina, our designer. In other words, whether it's the defining element of the collection or not, it will always be designed to harmonize with every garment in the collection.

These pieces enhance our collections, bringing the touch of originality and freshness that we believe is essential for a successful and complete collection. Indeed, we aim to offer a vibrant print each season, full of boldness and originality, and while we've chosen not to have a "signature" print, these three qualities represent our desire to brighten your day with our clothing. Because, as you may know, it's important to us to offer you clothes that we love and wear ourselves. Thus, our designer, a devoted print enthusiast, wants to share her love for them by offering you patterns that she adores: bold, striking, original—in other words, everything that defines the MAEVY style. Each of our prints is and will be a true MAEVY favorite, and we hope they will captivate you as much as they do us.

Reviving outfits that have become dull and adding color to you, the women who inspire us so much, are our two goals. To achieve this, prints are our tools, our weapons against the grayness of our times. So, get printing!
